It’s official! After weeks of doubt and alarming communications, we would like to announce some great news.
Our Health and Social Services Minister, Gaétan Barette has officially confirmed that the fertility drugs used for assisted reproductive technology (ART) will remain covered under the Régie de l’assurance Maladie du Québec (RAMQ). The official confirmation was made on 15th June when a new list of medications appeared on their website, including the coverage medications related to fertility treatments.
Starting in November 2015, when the government introduced Bill 20, patients became responsible for covering the costs of in vitro fertilization (IVF). This new Bill, however, offered the option to add infertility treatment costs as a medical-related expense for tax credits.
Thus to clarify all the revisions regarding infertility treatments and related medicine cost, here is a summary of the main changes:
Medicine:
-
Fertility drugs including the ones for hormonal stimulations or other procedures not including IVF procedures remain covered
-
All drug prescriptions have a maximum duration of one year but could be renewed with their doctor
-
Progesterone used for IVF will no longer be covered
Covered Service:
-
Medical consultations and follow up with an infertility specialist
-
Intrauterine insemination ( includes ovarian stimulations)
-
Treatments for fertility preservations related to medical reasons
