Certain treatments no longer insured by the RAMQ

Dear patients,

As of November 11th, 2015, certain fertility-related treatments will no longer be insured by the RAMQ. Couples or patients having begun fertility treatments prior to this date may, however, still be eligible for RAMQ insurance coverage.

Couples and patients who started IVF treatment before November 11th, 2015 shall remain insured until the end of the ovarian cycle in which the IVF treatment began, or until pregnancy is determined, whichever comes first.

The first consultation with a specialist physician (obstetrician/gynecologist, reproductive endocrinology/infertility specialist) were a couple or patient began the process of undergoing IVF treatments after an infertility diagnosis shall be considered the starting point for IVF treatments. The specialist physician must, however, have charged the RAMQ for this first consultation before the November 11th, 2015 deadline for any subsequent IVF treatments to be insured by the RAMQ.

Couples and patients currently undergoing IVF treatments, or who have not completed a previously insured transfer cycle, must complete their treatments within the next six (6) months (by May 10th, 2016) to be eligible for RAMQ insurance coverage.

Furthermore, medications prescribed to couples or patients by a specialist physician before November 11th, 2015 shall remain insured by the RAMQ, even if these prescriptions have not yet been filled by a pharmacist. No changes to RAMQ insurance coverage for fertility medications have been announced.

For all treatments beginning after November 11th, 2015, the cost of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments must now be assumed by the patient. Artificial insemination, as well as fertility preservation procedures for patients undergoing unrelated treatments that could impact fertility will continue to be insured by the RAMQ. Tax credits ranging from 20% to 80% (more information here) are available as of the 2015 taxation year to help offset the fiscal costs of fertility-related treatments.

We apologize for any inconvenience these changes may have caused. Please do not hesitate to contact our clinic directly for more information.

Thank you,
